The 15th Annual Transport Practitioners’ Meeting will be held 28th – 29th June 2017 in Nottingham. TPM is the annual meeting place for all transport planners, highway engineers and urban transport designers to share knowledge, engage in constructive debates  and disseminate the latest thinking across the profession.

What is TPM?

TPM is the annual meeting place for all transport planners, highway engineers and urban transport designers. Practitioners, policy makers and academics will present numerous, topical papers over the course of the two days, enabling lively debates and the dissemination of the latest thinking across the profession.

There are major changes within and related to the professional driving profession ahead of us. Those need to be prepared and supported by vocational education and training in order to reach their full potential but also to avoid a further increase of already todays’ deficit of skilled workers in this field that belonged continuously to the Top Ten jobs employers are having difficulty filling with competent employees over the past decade.

It is, therefore, of major importance to think ahead of time and to develop a vision of this profession in order to get ready for the changes that are ahead of us. The consortium of the European project “FutureDRV” representing specialist organisations from Germany, Austria, France, Sweden, Hungary and the UK addresses this challenge in the upcoming three years of project work.

The FutureDRV consortium invites experts and stakeholders on professional driving and professional driver qualification for a first expert round table in order to give the FutureDRV project an initial impetus and direction for the upcoming project work by exchanging on:

  • trends and innovations within transport and their impact on professional drivers’ qualification
  • the future role and function of professional drivers within transport
  • opportunities and challenges of future training for professional drivers 

The project is funded through the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Commission.

Tactical Supply Wing - Providing Aviation Fuel to Battlefield Helicopters in a Contested, Degraded and Operationally Limited EnvironmentBOOK NOW

Where: Tactical Supply Wing (TSW), MOD Stafford, Beaconside, Staffordshire ST18 0AQ

The TSW will host a Defence Forum event to offer CILT professionals the opportunity to learn more about how this specialist unit provides aviation fuel to battlefield helicopters. This unique organisation is one of the most heavily tasked, high readiness units within the UK’s Joint Helicopter Command and has seen almost continual operational service since its formation in 1970.

With a diverse range of capabilities, TSW builds and operates temporary storage sites, employs its fleet of cross-country tankers to transport fuel across the battlefield and conducts ‘Rotors Turning Refuels’ of helicopters. The unit is recognised as UK Defence’s subject matter experts in their field, and are specialists in activities such as parachuting fuel from C130s, flying it forward under-slung from helicopters or taking fuel direct from tactical aircraft such as the C130 Hercules into forward installations.

The event will include both static and live demonstrations, which will illustrate some of the equipment and capabilities the Wing employs, on exercise and operations. During these demonstrations, attendees will have the opportunity to interact with TSW personnel to ask questions regarding the equipment or procedures which the unit employs.  Delegates will hear from Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Jamie Miller, who will speak on TSW’s role as an Air Combat Service Support Unit, where they fit in to Defence and the challenges they face with the perceived change to the future operating environment. Specifically, the talk will outline how the Wing is planning to evolve its capabilities, both conceptually and physically in terms of desired changes to equipment. You will also hear about the support that TSW provides around the world to its diverse customers. He will also speak about how TSW’s capabilities are deployed to support Joint Helicopter Forces operating in a multitude of different austere locations, including desert, jungle and extreme cold weather environments. Subjects will include the levels of training that TSW personnel have to undertake in order to remain suitably qualified and experienced in refuelling helicopters in a combat environment.

The key to TSW’s effectiveness in meeting high readiness global deployed operations is its ability to prepare, generate and project personnel and equipment from MOD Stafford. Officer Commanding Headquarters Squadron will outline how TSW’s team of engineers, suppliers, drivers, administrators and training staff go about achieving this critical task.

With anecdotes from current and past operations, this will be a unique opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of recent developments.

Security restrictions apply to TSW and so delegates are required to provide full names, date of birth, nationality and if travelling by car, full vehicle details (make, model, colour and VRN) two weeks prior to the event. A form of photographic ID (passport or driving licence) will also be required on the day. As the visit will include an outdoor demonstration, warm/waterproof clothing is recommended.

We aim to have a mix of 'experts' and presentations from within the group. The environment is very informal.
