Any response to the growing concern about urban air quality has implications for all of us in the transport industry. Southampton is one of the five British cities that are introducing Clean Air Zones (CAZs) in order to meet the challenge of satisfying both civic and governmental demands for this specific environmental improvement. Whilst it will be the road transport sector that must make the most significant changes, Southampton's role as the port of choice for the world's largest cruise ships and vehicle and container carriers means that there will also be implications for maritime carriers. Our speaker will tell us how the Southampton CAZ will be introduced in 2019 and this means that it becomes essential listening for our CILT members who are active in all aspects of transport.

Road Safety is an issue which affects anyone who travels on the highways whether by vehicle or as a pedestrian.  It is not only of concern to the private individual but increasingly to employers and their employees.

The UK has one of the best road safety records in the world but demands are being made to improve even more. Traditionally the approach has been one of Education, Engineering and Enforcement – often running separately.  More recently various initiatives are emerging to aim “Towards Zero”.  There is a move towards not accepting injuries as being an inescapable consequence of road travel.  Following the lead taken by other industries, especially the aviation sector, Road Safety in the UK is developing significantly at this time.  Safe Systems approaches are now being used to stimulate and develop the move towards fewer casualties – especially those suffering life changing injuries.  Highways England has led the way with recent policy implementation.  However, Local Authorities are not far behind and are developing their own strategies and policies to shape the future of travel on their local roads which form the majority of the length of roads in the UK.

Lancashire has one of the worst records for child casualties in the UK and this presentation will give an insight into the level of those problems and those affecting other road user groups.  Also, Nick will detail the approach being taken by one of the UK's largest Highway Authorities as it works in partnership with other stakeholders to reduce casualties whilst maintaining and providing a network fit to facilitate the expected growth in vehicle movements including freight as the Northern Powerhouse develops over the next decade.

Refreshments and a light buffet will be provided.
