In November 2020 the Prime Minister launched the Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. In his foreword to this document we were asked to “imagine how our Green Industrial Revolution could transform life across our UK. You cook your breakfast using hydrogen power before getting in your electric car, having charged it overnight from batteries made in the Midlands. Around you the air is cleaner, and the trucks and trains, ships and planes are running on hydrogen or a synthetic fuel. British towns and regions — Teesside, Port Talbot, Merseyside and Mansfield — have become synonymous with green technology and the jobs they bring. This is where Britain’s ability to make hydrogen and capture carbon pioneered the decarbonisation of transport, industry and power.”

There is increasingly strong interest in the use of alternative fuels and which energy source is likely to be the best choice for different types of vehicle. As mentioned by the Prime Minister’s vision “trucks and trains, ships and planes are running on hydrogen or a synthetic fuel.”  This event will show how developments in hydrogen technology are moving at a fast pace. Three speakers will inform us of developments from their organisation’s point of view, covering a worldwide view to how this will impact on the UK.

Ronald Grasman, Vice President Global Fuel Cell Cooperation, Hyundai, will discuss their hydrogen trucks initiatives.  Hyundai Motors, Korea’s biggest automotive company has been producing hydrogen vehicles for some time and last July it began shipping hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to Switzerland. They have plans to start the mass production of hydrogen trucks in China by 2022 with the goal of selling more than 27,000 hydrogen trucks in China by 2030. They also have plans to increase their fuel cell business in Europe and the USA.

Manish Patel has agreed to give a presentation on Air Products product developments and strategy with regards to hydrogen for mobility. With more than 60 years of hydrogen experience, Air Products is at the forefront of hydrogen energy technology development. They have over 250 service stations worldwide that dispense hydrogen for the vehicle market for applications in trucks, buses and other vehicles.

William Darby, Senior consultant, elementenergy, will discuss the latest progress with the Aggregated Hydrogen (H2) Freight Consortium. This group has been established to bring commercial volumes of hydrogen fuel cell freight vehicles to the UK. They are doing this by aggregating the demand for fuel cell trucks and vans across a number of fleet operators who are ready to work together with vehicle manufacturers, refuelling infrastructure suppliers and government to create a viable hydrogen freight network.

The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.
