CILT sponsors new initiatives to raise the profile of the supply chain and logistics profession for young people

CILT has funded both an educational board game titled Business on the Move and a gaming app titled Cilty, The Logistics Challenge in a drive to raise awareness of the ever-growing supply chain and logistics industry amongst a younger audience.

Business on the Move has been designed to teach young people about the role and importance of today’s supply chain. Designed by former teachers for young people aged nine upwards to help children understand how the supply chain works in order to deliver products to shops and homes.

CILT is a key sponsor of Business on the Move and will be promoting the game with local schools and colleges.

Cilty, The Logistics Challenge gaming app has been developed by logistics academic Professor David Menachof with funding given through an initial ‘seed corn’ research award from CILT.

Commenting on the launch of Cilty, The Logistics Challenge Professor David Menachof said: ‘It’s apparent that logistics does not factor in our education system, and therefore students just don’t see it as a viable option for future study.’ Menachof continues: ‘Businesses are increasingly recognising that an integrated and responsive supply chain is needed to effectively compete in today’s market place, which means that they need to employ skilled supply chain practitioners. This can only happen if major education providers and stakeholders in the industry, such as the Logistics Institute and CILT, invest in raising awareness of logistics among young people and develop comprehensive and appealing education initiatives.’

Dorothea Carvalho, Professional Development Project Director, CILT commented: ‘We need to attract more young people into our profession and one of our constant challenges is informing them about the scope of careers in logistics and supply chain. There is a lack of awareness about logistics and what a supply chain is, so this project offered a new way of informing school age children about logistics through a medium which appeals to them rather than more traditional methods.’
