Transport Investigations Limited

TIL's has supported TOCs in developing smarter strategies for specialised areas of their work since 1998. Founded by experienced senior managers from the railway industry, it combines a deep understanding of the railways with the energy and originality of thought that come from working as an independent body.

Protecting revenue is of fundamental importance to train operators, yet can be a challenging and divisive issue, often characterised by a lack of understanding of the best approach, and a tension between enforcement and customer service. TIL’s board and management team have decades of proven revenue protection experience, having played a leading role in projects including the pioneering of self-service ticket machines, developing and introducing penalty fares and establishing the use of private prosecutions in magistrates’ courts. We are experienced in supporting TOCs in addressing the challenges presented by revenue protection, as well as being adept at recognising and responding to patterns of passenger behaviour.
Balancing the demands of engineering or upgrade projects, events or other disruptions to services, with the immediate needs of customers can be extremely challenging. Ensuring customers remain informed and are proactively assisted in completing their journeys can considerably ease congestion and mitigate potential damage to customer relations. TIL has proven and sustained experience in providing customer information and direction services, during both short and long-term projects, supporting train operators and their customers through periods of pressure and adversity.
With decades’ experience, TIL’s consultants are ideally placed to provide consultancy and advice in their key fields of expertise. They draw on years of engagement within the railway industry and have played an active role in the development of policy, including participating in parliamentary and legal negotiation in matters such as penalty fares, and are experienced in acting as consultants to TOCs. TIL has provided advice on fare, ticketing and revenue collection systems, as well as revenue protection methods. Clients have relied on our consultancy services in order to support franchise bids and concession letting.
