Is Manchester a safe city?

Manchester is known as the “Capital of the North” – a bustling metropolitan city steeped in history, culture and entertainment. The rules for being in the city are the same for being any other large city:

  • Avoid looking like a tourist – that means avoiding spending time standing around looking at maps and keeping cameras out of sight.
  • In crowded areas – such as on trams or buses – keep your wallet in your front pocket (and place your hand on it) or keep your handbag closed and hold it in front of you.
  • Don’t flaunt expensive belongings, such as cameras, smart phones, jewellery or cash, in public.
  • Be cautious when using ATMs and make sure not to carry too much cash on your person.
  • At night, avoid walking and instead opt for a public transport or a taxi. If walking is absolutely necessary, stick to well lit, public areas.
  • If you need directions or help, approach either a police officer or a store owner.
  • We recommend avoiding the area around the canal.
