What is ARE?

The Association of Rail Executives (ARE ) provides a unique networking forum for rail industry leaders. We bring together leaders from all sectors of the industry including: Network Rail, TOCs, FOCs, ROSCOs, Train Builders, Maintainers, DfT, TfL, RSSB and others, to provide a unique opportunity to share and cross fertilise ideas and experience across a wider spectrum of contacts than other forums. We invite prominent industry leaders to address our meetings and lead discussion around topical issues, under Chatham House rules.

ARE is part of the CILT Leading Edge initiative designed 

to develop the leaders of the future. The initiative encourages aspiring senior managers from your teams to challenge current leadership, and for current leaders to embrace diverse thinking.

ARE Rising Stars initiative

ARE invites member companies to nominate up to six ‘rising-stars’ to join our events. This initiative provides an important opportunity for your ‘directors-of-the-future’ to broaden their horizons. These usually younger managers have warmly welcomed our initiative, typically valuing the opportunity to network outside their employer company executives and to meet other senior industry personalities.

Future events

Association of Railway Executives (ARE) events are open to members and prospective members. Our events are held four times a year in central London and are a rare opportunity to network with a wide range of other senior leaders in an exclusive environment.

The typical format starts with a drinks reception before a senior executive gives a fifteen minute talk, followed by questions and answers. We conclude with canapés and drinks where you can have informal discussions with fellow members of ARE.

Corporate Membership

ARE holds quarterly meetings to help 'join up' industry thinking and to build networks between those actively working within the industry.

Membership is offered on a corporate basis at a rate of £800 per company (plus VAT). Each member company can nominate up to six individuals at Managing Director (MD) level, or their direct reports, to attend the meetings. Discounts are available for those companies that have a number of operating subsidiaries such as TOCs.

To maintain our focus on real industry issues Membership is limited to functional directors. Individual membership is offered on an exceptional basis  and journalists, lawyers and other consultants are specifically excluded from our events.

About us

The Association of Railway Executives gives our industry’s top leaders a unique chance to meet and discuss important topical issues.

Membership of ARE is typically limited to Directors plus their nominated direct reports. Members are invited to attend four events per year.

We are supported by The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport where you can find links to rail sector specific events, relevant qualifications, training and courses.

Richard Brown, CBE

Richard was Chief Executive of Eurostar from August 2002 to April 2010 and Chairman until June 2013, and was previously Commercial Director and main Board Director of National Express Group plc, where he set up its UK Trains Division, at the time the largest UK passenger franchise operator. He has spent 36 years in the transport industry, and was a Director of British Rail’s Intercity division before privatisation. He is a past President of Railteam and of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and was twice Chairman of the Association of Train Operating Companies. Richard now sits on the Department for Transport’s board as a non-executive member.
