We’re looking for a highly skilled senior manager who will:
- lead a programme of capital investment in, and responsible disposal of, the council’s fleet to ensure it is modern and fit for the future,
- drive best value from fleet procurement and the efficient use of vehicles across council services,
- manage a team of dedicated staff who are committed to ensuring vehicles are well-maintained, meet operational needs and are compliant with policy and regulation.
About the role
As Head of Fleet Management, you will be part of the service management team and the council’s extended leadership team. You will have a specialised remit, including:
- Driving the continuous improvement and development of the council’s approach to fleet management through effective performance monitoring and embedding of good practice.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant legal/regulatory requirements relating to fleet and excellent record keeping.
- Leading on the centralisation of fleet procurement to maximise buying power and value for money for the council, as well as pursuing opportunities for rationalisation and functional alignment across services.
- Acting as Lead Transport Manager for the council, as well as the Site Responsible Person at Hollingdean depot, and being the point of contact for the Traffic Commissioner and DVSA.
- Researching and advising on new technologies relating to vehicle and driver behaviour to develop low emission vehicle strategies.
You will have:
- Ambition for your service and the council with the drive to achieve excellence
- Proven experience in managing a fleet and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Well-honed knowledge of procurement and contract design, as well as refined contract management skills.
- Highly developed negotiation skills and the ability to build trusting relationships to successfully balance the diverse needs of services, whilst taking assertive action.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide innovative solutions in complex and varying contexts that are legally compliant.
- Experience of offering technical or specialist advice within a large and/or complex operation or service.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.
