Approaches to zero carbon fashion
Start Date:19 Oct 2021
End Date:19 Oct 2021
Event Code:WNYG0339
Description:

When: 19 October 2021, 17:00 - 18:00
Where: Zoom Webinar
Speaker: Dr Pammi Sinha, Associate Professor, Fashion Management School of Design, University of Leeds

The first principle of a circular economic approach is to design out waste and pollution. The sheer volume of production and consumption of fashion/textiles, with its inevitable waste, has seen global companies, government funded consortia and private entrepreneurs/inventors vying to be the first in developing a truly circular fashion and textiles industry through recycling of fibres, particularly from waste.

It can be argued, however, that recycling inadvertently supports systems that initially enabled current climate and environmental problems. Moreover, while recycling does lead to some savings in energy and resources, further energy and resources are needed to recycle, making zero carbon emissions even more distant. Moreover, according to the UN, the fashion industry emits 10% of all industry carbon emissions and contribute to global landfills between 2-6% volume of textiles... It’s imperative we work towards dematerializing to achieve net zero. The less we do with the fabric, the more we conserve of the energy initially expended.

In this seminar I will provide an overview of industry approaches currently being undertaken to lower the environmental impact of fashion on the road to net zero. Presenting the findings from two recent projects focused on postconsumer textiles waste, (Leeds and Colombo, Sri Lanka), I will argue for a greater understanding of waste textiles, from a systems perspective and a supply chain approach.
