Busy Birmingham Airport achieves new passenger landmark

23 August 2016/Categories: Industry News

Birmingham Airport has enjoyed its busiest year ever after serving its 11 millionth passenger last week.

In addition to passing the milestone, the West Midlands also recorded its busiest single day on record on Friday 19th August, with 44,767 passengers passing through the airport. That’s 14.1 per cent more than its previous busiest day (13th August 2015).

The number of people travelling through Birmingham Airport is up by 10.2 per cent so far in 2016, compared to all 12 months of 2014.

In the past 12 months, Birmingham’s long-haul traffic has increased by 26 per cent with services to the Middle East and North America up by a third. There has also been an 11.5 per cent jump in the number of low cost flights, while scheduled services grew by 6.9 per cent and charter 2.4 per cent.

Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, that reaching 11 million is “an absolute game changer” that demonstrates a rising demand for flying to and from the Midlands.
