Car traffic set to double this August bank holiday

25 August 2016/Categories: Industry News

Britain’s roads are set to take a battering this August bank holiday weekend, with twice as many car journeys anticipated compared to last year.

Some 20.7 million leisure trips are expected to be made by car between Thursday and Monday as Brits try to make the most of the last long weekend this side of Christmas.

This boost in congestion is believed to be down to the weaker pound resulting in more people opting for staycations.

According to the RAC, which surveyed more than 1,500 motorists, Saturday 27th August will be the busiest day with an anticipated five million getaways planned, 2.5 million more than on the same day in 2015.

Sunday is also expected to be hectic with 4.4 million leisure journeys, and 4.1 million on the Monday.

Motorists have been advised that the worst times to travel will be between 4pm and 9pm on the Friday, 11am and 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday, and 4pm and 6pm on the Monday.

An RAC spokesman advised motorists to check their car’s levels like oil, coolant, washer fluid and tyre pressure to cut the chances of it letting them down this bank holiday.
