Plymouth Citybus launches contactless

06 November 2017/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Bus & Coach, Transport Planning

Contactless payments are now available on all Plymouth Citybus services.

Buses are accepting contactless payment methods including bPay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Visa and MasterCard. Customers can simply ask the driver for a ticket or multiple tickets and instead of paying with cash, use a method of contactless payment.

Leader of the Council, Ian Bowyer, and Plymouth Citybus Managing Director, Richard Stevens, will be formally launching contactless on board one of the new Citybus fleet outside the Theatre Royal, Royal Parade, on Wednesday 8 November at 10AM.

Multiple tickets can be purchased in one contactless transaction as long as the total amounts to £30 or less. This means that tickets including dayrider, week and grouprider for example can all be purchased on board using contactless.

Plymouth Citybus is the only operator in Plymouth and the first in Devon to offer contactless as an on bus payment method. The payment method has been introduced after an extensive trial period on new ticket machines, which were installed across the Citybus fleet in October.

Richard Stevens, Managing Director, Plymouth Citybus, said: “This is a big step forward for us in removing the barriers to bus travel.

“We find that a common reason people choose not to use the bus is that they don’t carry cash or are afraid they do not have the correct change. From 5 November, passengers won’t need to carry cash to board our buses. Contactless also makes boarding faster, so we hope to see a direct improvement in boarding times.”
