New ScotRail trains unveiled

13 March 2015/Categories: Industry News

Over 70 new trains will be provided for the busiest ScotRail services once incoming operator Abellio takes over the franchise in April.

They will be built by Hitachi Rail, and will be quieter, longer and faster than the existing vehicles. The deal also has a provision that will allow the Scottish government to buy the stock after 25 years for £1 each - long after the end of Abellio’s ten-year franchise.

Transport minister Derek Mackay said: "With the new ScotRail franchise, a number of impressive infrastructure projects and these slick new trains, we are giving Scotland a railway to be proud of.

"Abellio's winning bid for the ScotRail franchise included several exciting proposals and I look forward to seeing it all take shape from their takeover of the service in just a few weeks.”
The new electric trains will provide a major boost to capacity, as well as cutting Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions.
