Chaos takes over at London Bridge amidst train delays

05 March 2015/Categories: Industry News

Deputy chair of the London Assembly's Transport Committee Val Shawcross has called on the government to tackle overcrowding on commuter services after being caught up in a major crush at London Bridge station.

Photographs taken as workers tried to make their way home on March 3rd show passengers jumping over ticket barriers in an attempt to escape the crowds and reach trains.

Services had been severely delayed due to signalling problems, partly caused by the latest stage of a £6.5 billion redevelopment programme across Network Rail, and a person being hit by a train.

Ms Shawcross said: “Everything you can think of – from new technology, staff management and day to day operations – it seems like it’s all gone wrong.”

She then added: “Thank God for the buses. I’d have had to sleep in the office otherwise.”
The British Transport Police stepped in to manage the crowds, but did not make any arrests.
