Face coverings in taxis and private hire vehicles

23 September 2020/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Bus & Coach, Transport Planning

From Wednesday 23rd September, the use of face coverings for passengers using taxis and PHVs will be mandated.

Please note that relevant exemptions will continue to apply for those with health, disability, or other reasons in line with the current face coverings on public transport regulations. The penalty for failing to wear a face covering will now be £200 for a first offence, doubling each time to a maximum fine of £6,400. This is in line with penalties for breaking the rule of six.

The Department for Transport has created several assets to support stakeholders in sharing messaging around what this means for taxi and PHV customers. The assets contain messages around how to ensure both drivers and customers are kept safe, as well as messaging on exemptions. All assets will be available shortly and can be found here.
