New drug laws for motorists take effect

02 March 2015/Categories: Industry News

A new law regarding limits for both legal and illegal drugs in drivers has come into effect today (March 2nd).

Officers will be able to test drivers for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside, and conduct tests for other substances at police stations to ensure that the rules are being followed.

Banned drugs that are covered by the new law include heroin, methylamphetamine, cannabis, LSD, ecstasy, ketamine and cocaine. The legislation also applies to the following prescription medications: morphine, clonazepam, diazepam, flunitrazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam, temazepam and methadone.

However, drivers using these medicines in accordance with their doctor’s instructions should not be over the limit, and thus are safe to continue driving.

Road safety minister Robert Goodwill said: “This new law will save lives. We know driving under the influence of drugs is extremely dangerous; it devastates families and ruins lives.

The government’s message is clear - if you take drugs and drive, you are endangering yourself and others and you risk losing your licence and a conviction.”
