UK trains to get free wi-fi by 2017

13 February 2015/Categories: Industry News

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that rail operators will be pushed to provide free wi-fi on selected trains by 2017.

The move will be backed with £47.8 million of government funding. The money comes from Network Rail’s fine for missing punctuality targets set by the Office of Rail Regulation. Of the £53.1 million total, £5.3 million has been allocated to the Scottish government, to reflect the number of late trains in the country.

The operators involved in this initiative are Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern, Southeastern, Chiltern and Arriva Trains Wales. The government will help them select the most suitable trains and services for the free wi-fi provision.

Rail minister Claire Perry said: “I am determined to improve journeys for rail passengers. Free wi-fi is a priority for many as being able to keep up with work, connect with friends or even check the latest journey information online helps make rail travel more productive.”
