BTP publishes near-miss rail CCTV

03 February 2015/Categories: Industry News

The British Transport Police (BTP) has revealed CCTV footage of three incidents where pedestrians and other road users narrowly avoid accidents on and around railway crossings. This is part of its latest safety campaign in collaboration with Network Rail, Operation Look.

The footage depicts a cyclist being hit by a crossing barrier as it is lowered due to his failure to slow down, a pedestrian almost being hit by a fast train after straying onto the tracks, and a car getting stuck after trying to sneak through a closed level crossing.

BTP Inspector Becky Warren said: “It may be tempting to jump a light to shave a minute or two off your journey, but every time you do, you endanger your life and the lives of other road and rail users.”

She added that taking risks around level crossings could also result in a driving ban and a criminal record.
