Welsh Govt offers major funding boost for school speed limits

30 December 2014/Categories: Industry News

Some 18 months after the Welsh Government called on local councils to impose 20mph speed limits around schools, the Welsh transport minister Edwina Hart has announced that £500,000 will be made available to create part-time speed limits. The plan initially applies to eight schools along the busy A483, but has the potential to be extended if funding is available.

The schools included in the pilot plan are Tycroes Primary, Ysgol Rhys Pritchard, Ysgol Teilo Sant, Llandeilo Primary, Ysgol Parcyrhun, Ysgol Gyfun Pantycleyn, Llandybie Primary, and Llandovery College. The limits will come into effect over the next two years.

Ms Hart said: “The evidence shows that 20mph speed limits can improve driver behaviour and reduce speeds around schools, however enforcement is key to the success of the speed limit.”

She described the time-specific nature of the limit as a compromise that helped keep traffic flowing on busy roads, while keeping children safe.
