Winter weather challenges UK roads

30 December 2014/Categories: Industry News

Strong winds and heavy snow have caused transport disruption around the UK in the busy post-Christmas period.

Flights were cancelled at Leeds Bradford International and John Lennon International, which were both forced to temporarily close due to excessive amounts of snow on their runways. There were also delays at Manchester Airport.

The north of England and the Midlands were also hit by heavy snow, reaching up to 11 cm in some places and effectively closing many roads, while some motorists found themselves stranded and had to abandon their vehicles.

Extremely strong winds of up to 100 mph even had an impact on sea travel, closing the port of Calais in France and Dover in England to all vessels.

Temperatures are also expected to drop to minus six over the coming days, making ice an increasing danger for road users.

The Met Office has issued a level three cold weather alert for the country.
