Milestone reached for Vauxhall station update

22 December 2014/Categories: Industry News

Redevelopment work at Vauxhall station has reached the halfway mark, according to Transport for London and contractors Bechtel.

The £36 million project is aiming to improve accessibility and capacity due to a predicted 40 per cent rise in people using the station over the next few years. This is due to the planned extension of the Northern line and related housing and business developments. The station currently sees over 20 million passengers every year.

Ailie MacAdam, head of Bechtel's rail business, said: “Carrying out tunneling activities and other major works within this busy station, while keeping it fully in use, is no small achievement."

The remaining work is set to be completed over the next 12 months, and will include extra ticket gates and other anti-congestion measures. A step-free route to Victoria line trains will also be completed. The predicted cost of the project has been cut from £45 million to £36 million thanks to efficiencies made by Bechtel.
