London hosts freight re-timing summit

27 November 2014/Categories: Industry News

The Quiet Cities summit in London has taken place over November 25th and 26th. This was the first ever global summit on the subject of re-timing freight deliveries.

The summit follows the success of rearranging freight deliveries to arrive outside of rush hour during the 2012 Olympic Games, helping ease pressure on the busy capital.

To mark the event, Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London released new guidance on how to responsibly increase flexibility for freight deliveries.

The guidance was published as part of TfL’s Road Modernisation Plan, which has received £4 billion of government funding. Since 90 per cent of London’s freight is delivered by road, this is the area on which the summit chose to focus.

Tim Slater, managing director of delivery company DHL, welcomed the discussion, saying: “By sharing best practice and innovative technologies, such as our new concept vehicle, re-timing of deliveries to out of the peak can become a reality; ensuring reliability, easing congestion and improving road safety.”
