Public transport in Birmingham is set to receive a massive investment totaling £4 billion over the next 20 years.
The announcement follows research that suggested Birmingham would have 80,000 more cars on its roads by 2031 if no action were taken. The new vision was laid out in Birmingham Connected, a document released on November 13th by the Labour Leader of Birmingham City Council, Sir Albert Bore.
The plans involve three new tram routes, as well as nine rapid transit bus lines. The rapid transit bus routes will be separated from other traffic by a kerb, and have the potential to be upgraded to trams in the future.
Environmental concerns are at the centre of the planned improvements. It has been suggested that some areas could become designated green transport zones, where people are encouraged to walk or cycle instead of using other forms of transport.
Announcing the Birmingham Connected proposals, Sir Albert said he hoped it would usher in “a new era” for the city.
