Scottish roads see 10% fall in casualties

23 October 2014/Categories: Industry News

Official statistics show there was a ten per cent fall in the number of people killed and injured on Scotland's roads during 2013.

Transport Scotland has revealed there were 11,498 road casualties reported to police in 2013 - the lowest level since records began.

The trend was apparent across all modes of transport, with a 12 per cent fall in pedestrian casualties, an 11 per cent drop for motorcycle casualties and a three per cent fall in pedal cycle casualties.

A three per cent drop in fatalities - to 172 - was also recorded, while the number of serious injuries declined by 16 per cent to 1,672.

A Transport Scotland spokesman welcomed the news but told the Courier there is no room for complacency when it comes to road safety

"We are taking forward a raft of measures alongside our road safety partners, including high-profile publicity campaigns to promote safer driving and highlight the dangers of risk-taking on our roads," he added.
