The Committee on Climate Change has called for more to be done to improve the resilience of the UK's infrastructure.

Severe weather events such as the storms that affected the country during the last winter highlight the potential disruption that could take place in the future, according to a new report published by the committee.

While improvements are being made in some areas, such as train services and power supplies, adequate plans are lacking in other areas.

The committee recommends the comprehensive approach established by the power sector to protect their networks from severe weather should be adopted by water companies, for major roads, ports and airports, and by telecommunications providers.

Recently, the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) rated the transport sector D or 'at risk' in its Infrastructure 2014 report. This was due to inadequate resilience to flooding and the decline in local roads maintenance following investment cuts.

The ICE called for resilience to form part of the criteria used as a basis for making decisions on priority infrastructure projects.
