An initial report exploring the possibility of a rail link between Heathrow and the south of England has been ordered by the Department for Transport (DfT), it has been confirmed today (July 11th).

The study will build upon research into the feasibility of such a connection conducted by Wandsworth Council, which recommends a direct route to Waterloo via Clapham Junction and Vauxhall.

Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "We have brought the government to the table and the prospect of a 30 minute rail journey between Wandsworth and Heathrow is a step closer."

Investigations will be led by Network Rail and the first-stage report will look to detail potential demand, frequency of services, journey times, passenger capacity and potential interchange points with other transport services.

A subsequent second-stage report is expected to be completed by June 2015, comprising a shortlist of route options.

Currently, the lack of viable rail connections leads to congestion on the roads around Heathrow and means pollution levels are above EU targets.
