UK car manufacturing up by a fifth

29 May 2014/Categories: Industry News

UK car manufacturing received a welcome boost in April, with output rising by one fifth during the month.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), car production in the UK increased by 21.3 per cent in April to 133,437 units. This is the largest monthly rise since July 2012.

Year-to-date volumes increased by 6.9 per cent, with January-April exports up 8.7 per cent.

The SMMT noted output was boosted by the introduction of new models at car manufacturing plants throughout the country.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "New model introductions are fuelling growth, while Europe - which currently accounts for around half of exports - is now seeing an upturn in demand."

He added that further rises are expected in the coming months as investments are realised.

News of the manufacturing boost came as famous manufacturer Aston Martin revealed it is to exist £20 million in new facilities at its Gaydon site.
