Transport for London (TfL) has announced an increase in the congestion charge in order to maintain its effectiveness and improve customer service.

Following a public consultation that took place earlier this year, the daily congestion charge is to increase from £10 to £11.50. This alteration will take effect on June 16th 2014.

Those who use the auto pay system and fleet customers will pay £10.50 a day, while the fee will be £14 if paid the next charging day.

TfL says the increase will help to ensure only the most essential journeys are made into the centre of London and will raise an income of £82.7 million over the next five years. This money will be reinvested into the capital's transport network.

A range of benefits are to be introduced to improve the customer experience, such as direct debit payments for CC Autopay users.

Garrett Emmerson, TfL's chief operating officer for Surface Transport, said: "These changes will ensure the congestion charge remains effective in managing congestion in central London."
