ScotRail: Work progresses on Motherwell railway station expansion

13 September 2022/Categories: Rail

Motherwell railway station has entered the fifth phase of the redevelopment project, work is underway to expand the station concourse which will make way for an enhanced station forecourt and building with glazed roof.

Over the next few weeks, work will continue to take place to lay the foundations of the new expanded concourse and the steel structure which will become the new larger station building will continue to be erected.

North Lanarkshire Council are also carrying out work to overhaul the public realm outside the station building to create a new transport hub, with support from the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

This includes an expanded bus facility, new station access road, car drop-off area and blue-badge parking, as well as improved facilities for taxis and pedestrian and cycle access.

Once complete, it will improve links between bus and train services as well as reducing congestion in the town centre.

The £14.5m project will deliver a host of further benefits for customers including improved ticket retailing facilities, an enhanced retail environment with food and drink offering, and refurbished waiting facilities.

John MacDonald, ScotRail Senior Project Manager, said:

“We’re now at a really exciting stage of this project, where customers can see the scale of the work we’re undertaking to create a bigger, brighter station. We’re progressing the installation of the steel frame and glazed roof across the concourse which will give customers more of a feel for how the new station building will look."
