New figures have revealed that the London Underground carried a record number of passengers last year.

The rail network transported 1.265 billion passengers in 2013-14 - up from 1.229 billion the previous year, the London Evening Standard reports. This represents year-on-year growth of three per cent.

Service levels have been boosted on the Piccadilly Line to accommodate weekend demand from shoppers, tourists and regular travellers, with Saturday afternoon services now almost as busy as weekday peaks.

Extra trains have also been introduced on the Jubilee line so London Underground is able to operate the full peak service of 30 trains every hour for longer periods during the busiest times.

Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, said: "It is amazing that the Underground is carrying a third more customers now than it did only ten years ago, and customer demand shows no signs of letting up."

He added that improvements currently in the pipeline will improve capacity and enhance customer experience.
