Google Maps to integrate UK transport data

14 May 2014/Categories: Industry News

Google Maps has added technology to its service that will allow users to access public transport information for the whole of Great Britain.

While this data has previously been made available for parts of the UK such as London and the south-east, coverage has been lacking in much of Wales, the Midlands and northern England.

As of today (Wednesday May 14th), users on iOS and Android apps and on the desktop version will have access to departure times and routes for buses, ferries, trains and trams.

More than 17,000 different routes have been included and schedules from nearly 1,500 different transport operators have been integrated into the system.

David Tattersall, product manager for public transport in Google Maps, told the Guardian: "The biggest changes will be on mobile, as devices are becoming more and more powerful and they're things we spend a lot of time with."

Around a third of Google Maps' total usage occurs on mobile devices.
