Heathrow considers congestion charge

09 May 2014/Categories: Industry News

Heathrow is considering introducing a congestion charge if a third runway is approved at the airport.

Later this month, it will tell the Airports Commission there may be a case for introducing the charge following the improvement of transport links which are currently being made.

Heathrow says such a move would reduce traffic congestion levels and improve air quality for local communities while raising money for public transport improvements.

The airport has pledged to raise the amount of passengers using public transport to access its facilities from 40 per cent today to more than 50 per cent by 2030.

Heathrow head of surface access Simon Earles said people raised issues of congestion and air quality during the airport's community consultation and the levy would be one way of tackling such problems. Exemptions could be made for the most environmentally friendly vehicles, however.

"The idea is at an early stage and we will of course consult on these plans at the appropriate time," Mr Earles added.
