Northern are to trial sign language announcements on trains

27 September 2023/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Logistics & Supply Chain, Rail

Station announcement interpretations will first be seen on trains between Manchester Victoria and Leeds via new British Sign Language (BSL) visuals.

Data from the 2021 Census revealed that in addition to spoken languages, BSL was the main language of 22,000 people.

Onboard systems manager at Northen, Marc Silverwood said: “We know that rail travel can be daunting for anyone with specific needs, and I really hope this makes a difference to give people confidence to travel by rail.

“International Day of Sign Languages which will take place on September 23rd, has really driven this home to us – we want to make a difference to our customers and provide for them as needed.”

Northan are looking for partners to help with the success of this project, charities, organisations or experts who could help provide sign language interpreters are encouraged to get involved.

A trial by the train operator should be on track and up and running by the end of the year.

Marc added: “We’re looking out for people who could help with this scheme to interpret our announcements and who could share their expertise with us – so we can create the best possible service for our BSL passengers.”
