The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has warned motorists need to be better educated about using the new 'smart motorway'.
A section of the M25 between Junctions 23 and 25 has been developed to allow traffic to use the hard shoulder as a normal lane, in an attempt to improve journey times and boost the UK economy. The first stage of the initiative came into force on April 14th.
However, the FTA has claimed motorists will need to be made aware how the new changes will affect their driving. It stated road users must familiarise themselves with the new signs and signals they will face, plus how to act in the event of a breakdown.
Malcolm Bingham, head of road network management policy at the organisation, stated: "The Highways Agency has produced an information leaflet on the new operation and the Association is urging fleet operators and their drivers to look to the advice provided."
A second stretch of the M25 between junctions five and seven is due to become 'smart' next month.
