Government's zero emission vehicle mandate now law

Under the UK's zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate , it requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030. This will increase to 100% by the 2035 deadline.

The new regulations follow the decision to delay the ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030 to 2035. According to the govt, this will allow more time for consumers to switch to electric and for charging infrastructure to expand.

Technology and Decarbonisation Minister Anthony Browne said: "Alongside us having spent more than £2 billion in the transition to electric vehicles, our zero-emission vehicle mandate will further boost the economy and support manufacturers to safeguard skilled British jobs in the automotive industry."

“We are providing investment certainty for the charging sector to expand our charging network which has already grown by 44% since this time last year. This will support the constantly growing number of EVs in the UK, which currently account for over 16% of the new UK car market.”

The government has invested over £2 billion to support the rollout of zero emission vehicles and charging infrastructure. This includes grants for home chargepoints and vans.

The UK's public charging network has grown 44% since last year, now totalling over 50,000 chargepoints. The ZEV mandate aims to provide industry confidence to invest further in infrastructure.
