Hydrogen Electrolyser installed at Amazon fulfilment centre

17 January 2024/Categories: Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain

Plug Power has completed installation of an electrolyser system at an Amazon fulfilment centre in Aurora, Colorado.

The one-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyser is producing low-carbon hydrogen on site to fuel over 225 hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklift trucks, marking the first such system for Amazon.

The Plug electrolyser uses electricity and water to generate hydrogen, supporting up to 400 forklifts. The on-site hydrogen production will be compressed and stored in a tank for the truck refuelling, avoiding emissions from traditional hydrogen transportation.

Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh said: "In Amazon, we have a true partner that recognises the essential role hydrogen plays in our collective energy future.

"This project demonstrates Plug's ability to execute across the full hydrogen value chain and shows how we can design and implement end-to-end solutions for our customers."

Plug Power has deployed over 17,000 fuel cells in Amazon facilities across North America, though most sites rely on delivered hydrogen.

Amazon's Director of global hydrogen economy Asad Jafry said: "Hydrogen is an important tool in our efforts to decarbonise our operations by 2040 in support of The Climate Pledge, and we’re excited about our ability to produce hydrogen at Amazon facilities through this partnership with Plug."

"On-site production will make the use of hydrogen even more energy efficient for certain locations and types of facilities."

For this pioneering project, Plug provided full design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance services for the electrolyser and hydrogen storage, integrating with existing infrastructure. This marks the first operational electrolyser system powering Amazon forklifts with on-site clean hydrogen.
