RAF elevates logistics with Project Kinetic Cargo deployment

05 March 2024/Categories: Industry News, Aviation, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain

The Royal Air Force (RAF) 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron in Lakenheath has recently implemented a project called ‘Project Kinetic Cargo.’

Project Kinetic Cargo will enhance logistics processes and bolster cargo handling capabilities within the squadron, says RAF Lakenheath.

Representing a shift in in cargo processing, leveraging digital technology to optimise efficiency and accuracy, the project system utilises a deployable automated cargo measuring system (DACMS).

DACMS employs profiling lasers and scales, capturing precise measurements and weight of cargo whilst in motion.

The centre of balance of the cargo is then calculated within a computer system creating an almost paperless process.

Rapidly processing cargo is essential to delivering supplies and equipment to operational theatres, minimising delays in supply chains and enhancing overall tempo and responsiveness to changing mission requirements.

Staff Sgt. John Mackey, 48th LRS air transportation function supervisor said: "Accelerate Change or Lose and ACE are driving factors towards implementing the new system and pushing our logistics community towards innovation, process improvement, and the requirement to move dense amounts of cargo faster with less manpower."

"In its debut operational use, we concluded that it was very successful at reducing the manpower and time required to process cargo.

"We plan to continue using the Kinetic Cargo system and look for ways to further integrate it into our systems, which could significantly reduce manpower requirements further," he added.
