16 April 2024/Categories: Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain, Rail

Russell Group has acquired the Coatbridge Rail Terminal from Freightliner, the terminal is located adjacent to Russell Group's existing operations in Coatbridge, Scotland.

Acquisition has led to the rise of new trading entity, Russell RailRoad Limited, focused on rail freight solutions.

The company have said the move allows Russell Group to expand its logistics services and operations.

Russell Group CEO, Alan Poulton said: “Acquiring Freightliner's Coatbridge site unlocks many new supply chain opportunities for our company's future.

“This enhanced efficiency goes hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility, enabling us to significantly reduce emissions and support both the Company’s and our customers' sustainability objectives by shifting freight from road to rail.

The expansion is expected to create new job opportunities for employees as the company grows and diversifies its offerings.

Customers are likely to benefit from improved connectivity, faster delivery times and integrated multimodal transport solutions combining rail with other modes.

The UK logistics company say a key driver behind the acquisition is Russell Group's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

Shifting more freight to rail transportation will significantly cut emissions compared to road haulage.

Russell RailRoad Limited intends to leverage its strategic location in central Scotland to provide competitive rail freight services.

Russell Group founder and Chairman, John G Russell said: "With great pride, we announce the successful acquisition of the Coatbridge Freightliner Terminal.

“This landmark move furthers our 45-year legacy in rail freight, aligning seamlessly with our commitment to expand eco-friendly and far-reaching solutions for our valued customers.

“We warmly welcome our new colleagues to embark on a journey of collective innovation, growth, and mutual success.”
