More seafarers to receive training for electric-propelled vessels

17 September 2024/Categories: Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Ports, Maritime & Waterways

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has put out key benchmarks for consultation, aiming to increase training opportunities for seafarers working on the growing number of electric-propelled vessels.

The MCA published draft criteria today (September 17) as the foundation for new courses to be offered by maritime training providers. These criteria include minimum learning requirements for safety and technical skills. Each course must receive MCA approval before being made available to trainees.

The document is the result of close collaboration between the MCA and various stakeholders, including training providers, businesses and industry bodies such as the Workboat Association.

MCA Chief Examiner Ajit Jacob said: "It is vital for seafarers' skills to keep pace with technological advances, including electric propulsion, which is expanding strongly among small to medium-size vessels such as ferries, workboats and commercial yachts.

"These courses based on the new criteria will form a springboard for highly skilled seafarers to develop their careers and contribute to the UK's successful maritime industry."

The draft course requirements are divided into two parts. The first, intended for all crew members, covers general topics such as safety and basic procedures, including fire-suppression arrangements. The second part, designed for technical crew, focuses on key elements such as battery management and control, as well as maintenance and repair.

It's important to note that these courses will not be mandatory for seafarers. The final version of the criteria will be published after the consultation feedback has been analysed.

The four-week consultation launched on 16 September, with emails sent to stakeholders. Interested parties have until 20 October to submit their feedback.
