TfL launches new motorcycle safety plan

25 March 2014/Categories: Industry News

Transport for London (TfL) has announced the launch of a new scheme to improve motorcycle safety.

Conducted with cooperation from representatives of the motorbike industry, the study comprises a detailed analysis of the risks faced by bikers on the streets of the capital. It outlined 29 actions it felt would target key factors in collisions, which in turn would help reduce the number of casualties.

TfL stated it was committed to ensuring the safety of motorbikers and pointed out the number of riders killed on the city's roads has halved in the last decade. Despite this, there were 629 fatal or serious collisions in 2012.

Mayor Boris Johnson commented: "This plan clearly sets out our commitment to make London's roads as safe as possible for motorcyclists, many of whom play a key role in keeping businesses moving."

He added one of TfL's main safety priorities was to reduce the number of bikers killed or seriously injured in the capital by 40 per cent by 2020.
