The City of London Corporation has launched a major clampdown on carelessly parked hire e-bikes confiscating more than 100 during a two-week enforcement campaign.
This action comes in response to mounting complaints about e-bikes blocking pavements and causing hazards to pedestria
ns across the Square Mile.
Seized bikes were held for 24 hours before operators could retrieve them for a fee to cover removal and storage costs.
To address the issue long-term, authorities have pledged to create 300 additional parking spaces throughout the City.
They are also working alongside Transport for London (TfL) and other London councils to implement consistent enforcement measures across the capital.
Tow of London’s largest e-bike operators Lime and Forest have committed to improving its service following discussions with senior City officials.
Shravan Joshi, Chair of the City's Planning and Transportation Committee said: "I recently met with the CEO of Lime, along with their CFO and UK Director which provided an opportunity to ensure their global senior leadership fully understands the impact."
"Lime has seen remarkable success and with 16 million journeys taken during London's commuting hours in 2024, their presence on the streets is undeniable, but so too are the challenges posed by bikes cluttering our pavements," he added.
As part of its response, Lime is also launching a safe riding campaign and will fund new parking bays through their Parking Infrastructure Fund.
The Corporation said it will continue monitoring the situation to ensure the new measures deliver meaningful results as it works with partners.
