The UK has welcomed the world’s first dual-fuelled ammonia-powered vessel docking at the Port of Southampton on Monday, 3 March.

The Fortescue Green Pioneer, a Singapore-flagged vessel, has arrived to showcase how ammonia can be used as a sustainable marine fuel.

The ship is powered by a four-stroke engine, with two of its engines capable of running on ammonia and diesel.

Ammonia is a zero-carbon fuel that could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry.

The government said it fully supports the shift towards cleaner shipping and is working to establish the country as a leader in green energy.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has been working with the vessel’s team to ensure it meets UK regulatory requirements.

Upon arrival at the Port of Southampton, the MCA’s Survey and Inspection team will conduct safety and compliance checks.

The ship will then travel to West India Dock in London, where it will be showcased to industry leaders and the public.

Maritime Minister Mike Kane welcomed the ship and said: “It’s great to welcome this pioneering, first-of-a-kind vessel to UK shores – this is exactly the kind of innovation that will drive forward decarbonisation in the shipping sector.”

Lars Lippuner, MCA Director of UK Customer Services, added: “Decarbonisation in the maritime sector is a huge priority for the UK and shipping, and Fortescue Green Pioneer successfully demonstrates what a future of cleaner shipping could look like.”

Fortescue’s Executive Chairman, Dr Andrew Forrest, called for global regulators to support zero-emission fuels, saying: “This vessel encapsulates the innovation and character that has defined Fortescue’s mission to lead the world beyond fossil fuels.”

The MCA said it will continue to work with international partners to develop safety guidelines for ammonia-powered vessels, ensuring the transition to greener fuels is both safe and effective.
