Amazon has announced plans to invest £40 billion in the UK over the next three years, with a major emphasis on expanding its national logistics network. The investment, spanning 2025 to 2027, includes the construction of four new fulfilment centres, the addition of new delivery stations, and upgrades to more than 100 existing operations sites across the country.
The tech giant confirmed that the expansion will create thousands of new full-time, permanent jobs, most of which will be based outside London and the South East. Among the key developments are two state-of-the-art fulfilment centres in Hull and Northampton, each set to generate 2,000 new jobs. Additional facilities are planned for the East Midlands and other regional locations.
“Amazon has been proud to serve our customers in the UK for the past 27 years,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. “Thanks to their support, we've grown to be part of over 100 communities nationwide, from developing drone technology in Darlington to producing world-class entertainment at our studios in Bray.
“We now employ over 75,000 people and have become one of the UK's largest private sector employers and taxpayers. When Amazon invests, it’s not only in London and the South East – we’re bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK’s economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live.”
In addition to fulfilment and delivery infrastructure, Amazon’s investment will support enhancements to its UK-wide transportation network. This is aimed at improving delivery speed and reliability, as well as supporting the thousands of small and medium-sized UK businesses that sell on Amazon’s global platform.
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, welcomed the announcement, calling it a “massive vote of confidence” in Britain’s economic potential. “Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business. It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families.
"Whether it’s cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery, this deal shows that our Plan for Change is working—bringing in investment, driving growth, and putting more money in people’s pockets.”
The logistics expansion is complemented by significant moves in cloud infrastructure and AI capacity, including part of a previously announced £8 billion investment into building and operating data centres across the UK. The data centre portion alone is expected to contribute £14 billion to the UK’s GDP between 2024 and 2028 and support 14,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves called the move “a powerful endorsement of Britain’s economic strengths”, while Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the investment “will create highly-skilled jobs and boost living standards across the country”.
Amazon is also ramping up its apprenticeship programme with 1,000 new full-time roles across more than 40 schemes in 2025. Furthermore, it continues to support upskilling and job creation through its Career Choice education benefit and AI training initiatives, including the AWS Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance.
The fulfilment centre in Hull is set to open later in 2025, with recruitment beginning in July.
As part of the company’s push towards sustainability, Amazon is also expanding its fleet of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) in the UK, with over 140 new electric trucks being added. These are expected to transport more than 300 million customer packages each year without exhaust emissions.
With over £75 billion already invested in UK operations over the last decade, Amazon’s latest commitment further cements its role as a driving force in the UK’s logistics, technology, and employment sectors.
