London Gatwick Airport, owned by VINCI Airports and GIP (Global Infrastructure Partners), is set to be introducing 14 new 18 metre long 100% electric tram buses that will connect the airports lo
ng stay car parks to the terminals and will completely replace the current buses used by the airport today.
The announcement followers a £14 million deal signed by Irizar e-mobility who has been contracted to supply the buses to the airport.
Irizar e-mobility described the vehicles as futuristic, with a minimalist design and a tram-like look, a fitting choice for a model called the Irizar ie tram.
The Irizar ie trams will be powered by Irizar’s latest batteries and charged using an ultra-fast pantograph system.
According to Irizar, the vehicles will be able to fully charge in just six minutes or less.Key features of the bus include digital vision cameras, which significantly improves the front, side and rear visibility, luggage racks, wide aisles, USB chargers and Wi-Fi.
