Heathrow Airport handled 7.9 million passengers in July 2025, marking its busiest month on record, with passenger demand continuing to grow year-on-year.
The milestone comes as the airport pushes forward with expansion plans to meet increasing capacity demands.
The airport recorded its busiest single day ever on 1st August, with 270,869 passengers passing through its terminals. Annual passenger numbers from August 2024 to July 2025 reached 83.9 million, representing a 2.1% increase.
North American traffic alone rose 0.9% in July compared to the previous year, driven by heightened demand around US Independence Day.
Against this backdrop of growing passenger volumes, Heathrow has submitted plans to the Government for a privately-funded third runway.
The airport argues the expansion could be operational within a decade and would increase cargo handling capacity by 50% whilst providing passengers with lower fares and more destination choices.
The Government is expected to decide the next steps with an update in Autumn.
Despite record passenger numbers, Heathrow has maintained operational efficiency, holding the title of Europe's most punctual major hub for seven consecutive months.
The airport consistently outperforms Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt, Madrid, and Paris Charles de Gaulle by over 20% on daily performance metrics, with 95% of passengers waiting less than five minutes at security.
Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said: "It's that time of year when everyone is looking forward to their well-earned summer breaks and Heathrow is proud to play our part in delivering smooth and reliable journeys.
“We continue to break records as Europe's largest and most punctual hub - adding value for our airline partners and passengers."
