Birmingham regeneration project welcomes 100th apprentice

05 March 2014/Categories: Industry News

The regeneration of Birmingham New Street station has welcomed the addition of its 100th apprentice.

Network Rail made the announcement to coincide with the start of National Apprenticeship Week, which is designed to highlight the potential benefits businesses can gain by hiring trainees. It stated the scheme in the Midlands took only two years to reach this milestone and promised more opportunities would follow.

Consultancy firm Mace, which is partnering the the local council on the project, believed the appointment of apprentices allowed businesses to profit from new ideas and a fresh way of thinking. It called on companies to ensure their trainees were properly nurtured to help them build successful careers.

Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for jobs, development and skills, commented: "To achieve this milestone gives a strong message of what can be achieved through leading by example and striving for excellence in skills and employment."

The redevelopment project at Birmingham New Street aims to employ around 1,000 people while the work is ongoing. It is also expected to benefit millions of passengers every year upon completion.
