Freight handling firm Swissport has invested in a new facility at East Midlands Airport that trebles its capacity, responding to rapidly growing demand for air cargo services.
The company relocated to larger on-site premises in April after volumes it handles doubled year-on-year, with projections indicating continued growth through 2026.
The move forms part of Swissport's global strategy to enhance e-commerce handling services across its network of 117 warehouses worldwide.
East Midlands Airport has experienced significant growth, attracting four new cargo airlines operating dedicated 777 or 747 freighter aircraft.
This expansion contributed to a 17.4% rise in freight volumes, totalling more than 103,000 tonnes between May and July compared to the same period last year.
Swissport now provides cargo handling services for three of these new carriers - Saudia Cargo, Ethiopian Cargo and Atlas Air - alongside One Air, which transferred operations from Heathrow last year.
The company's handled tonnage increased from almost 19,000 tonnes in the August 2023 to July 2024 period to close to 37,000 tonnes for the equivalent timeframe this year.
The new facility features enhanced infrastructure including a truck dock, a caster deck system capable of storing cargo for up to 60 aircraft positions, and an automated speed lane for unitised cargo movement.
Swissport currently handles 21 flights weekly and forecasts processing more than 50,000 tonnes in 2026.
Aviation experts project East Midlands could see cargo volume growth of 54% over the next two decades.
This has prompted development of long-term expansion plans potentially including four runway-side plots with new warehousing and aircraft stands.
East Midlands Airport's Head of Aviation David Craig said: "We're delighted that one of our key airport partners is playing an integral role in the ongoing development, growth and success of our cargo operation."
Swissport UK & Ireland Chief Commercial Officer Luke Hayhoe commented: "The growth we've seen at East Midlands Airport is a true testament to the power of strong partnership and shared ambition."
