Plans approved for new Jersey cargo centre

03 March 2014/Categories: Industry News

Plans to create a new cargo centre at Jersey airport have been approved.

Despite acknowledging the building would be highly visible from the roads, planning officials concluded it would be an integral part of the airfield's business operations. Meanwhile, the local authority has launched a tender process to attract contractors for the project. As well as the new logistics hub, a two-storey headquarters for the airport's engineering team will be constructed.

It is hoped work on the 30,000 sq ft centre will begin in May, with the building anticipated to become operational by January 2015. Although the States of Jersey has not commented how much the plans are likely to cost, investment is expected to come from the island's trading fund, rather than the taxpayer.

To make way for the new structure, the existing cargo centre at Aviation Beauport will be demolished. Its replacement will be situated on the south side of the departures lounge.
