Taking part in the Freight Transport Association's (FTA) inspection service (VIS) reduces the risk of vehicles developing brake defects.
Figures released by the organisation showed lorries that were involved in the scheme were 86 per cent less likely to encounter the fault. This is because companies that use the programme operated more efficiently and to a higher standard, according to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.
Participation in the service showed a reduction in the risk of trucks developing a fault with the steering mechanism by 45 per cent, while exhaust system issues were cut by 67 per cent.
Head of FTA's VIS, David Wylie, commented: "Whether it be to have their preventative maintenance inspection carried out, or their maintenance contractor audited, the messages is clear - those using FTA's VIS can rest assured they are far more compliant."
The association is also offering a health-check audit for companies that are not already use the service. The introductory cost to inspect one vehicle is £350 plus VAT.
