Network Rail intends to further improve Northern Hub

21 February 2014/Categories: Industry News

Network Rail has sought permission to further improve its £600 million Northern Hub project.

The organisation has submitted a request to install a new section of railway near Huyton, which is hoped will further enhance the service between Manchester and Liverpool. The plans will see the construction of a fourth track on land adjacent to the station, which is currently occupied by a telephone exchange and bus interchange.

Planning permission is required to build the new 240m section of rail, via a Transport and Works Act order. The proposals were put forward as the result of a successful consultation session last year.

Martin Frobisher, area director for Network Rail, commented: "The Northern Hub will create space for up to 700 more trains every day which will boost capacity and provide better journey options for passengers."

It is hoped the new plans will allow additional on-stopping services to run on the line, without the worry of being held up.
